Our most recent unit in writing was research based. Students worked in research clubs to learn about a particular topic. Then the students got to work creating a research book to teach others about their topic. After they finished their books, they turned their research into google slides presentations. This years presentations are top notch. I couldn't be more proud of their hard work and their dedication to make their presentations unique. Check out the link to view the google slides: https://goo.gl/dGGSEO You can also check out some pictures of them presenting below. We have finished publishing and sharing our gripping stories. As this fiction writing unit comes to an end, we are excited to work on non fiction writing. Students will pair their non-fiction reading and writing skills to research and write about a topic of their choice.
Here are some pictures of us sharing our gripping stories with Mrs. McKenzie's class. The Flat Stanley project has been an exciting way to help students learn about mapping and regions. The Stanleys have been arriving often and we have been so excited to learn about his travels. Check out our bulletin board below.
March has been full of fun here in room 3! We have been enjoying lots of guest readers and enjoying some great HES Loves to read activities like: Drop Everything And Read, Poetry Breaks, Dressing as A Favorite Character, Vocabulary Word Walks, and Book Breaks.
In reading, we have been studying series books. We have been working in our book clubs to learn about the characters and how books in a series tend to go. In writing, we have been working on our gripping stories. We are including dialogue, gripping words, strong feelings, lessons, and actions to really engage the reader. In math, we are finishing up our unit on data, graphing, and measurement. We will be taking our unit assessment next week. The class has done a great job this month. I am so proud of all their hard work! Second grade was super excited to have two Black Wolves players join us to celebrate HES Loves to Read month. Kyle Buchanan and Derek Searle read to the classes and then answered questions about perseverance, setting goals, and using failure to help them grow as players. They signed autographs for all the students at the end of the session.
We have been working on opinion writing with a focus on our opinions about books and characters. This week, we learned about writing a letter with a specific audience in mind. In class, we worked with groups to write a letter to 4 different audiences: a friend, the kindergartners, the principal and the 4th graders. We discussed things that would be different depending on the audience such as the language you would use and the things you would talk about. Check it out...
We have been learning about how to use an open number line to solve addition problems. Interested in learning more about how an open number works? Click the link below to see a video about how to use an open number line to solve an addition problem.
