Classroom Update

1/20/2017

We have launched our newest units in reading, writing and math. In reading, we have been working on getting to know the characters in our stories. We are relying on our strong reading habits to help us keep track of characters. We are also getting an idea about the characters by previewing the book to see what we can uncover. After that, we pay attention to the characters actions and think about what their actions tell us about them.

In writing, we have started writing letters about our reading. As we study characters, we develop opinions about them. Our letters share our opinions and support our ideas with examples from the text.

In math, we are working on addition and subtraction within 100. So far we have learned how to use an HTO frame to add 2-digit numbers. Next week we were learn about the open number line and how we can use that to help us solve problems too! Remember to keep working on those addition and subtraction math facts at home!

I hope that everyone had an enjoyable and relaxing holiday break! We are cruising into the new year here in room 3! Take a look at our current units of study:

Reading: Our current unit is called "Bigger Books Mean Amping up Reading Power" In this unit, we are learning about strategies for tackling longer texts with more complex characters and plots. We are learning to identify and understand literary language, develop more fluency by rereading, and using post-its to keep track of longer books.

Writing: In writing, we are studying poetry. The students are seeing the world with poets eyes. They are also learning about ways to gain inspiration, give their poetry "music", trying out repetition, and thinking about moods in their writing.

Math: We are finishing up our unit on shapes, partitioning, and time. We have learned to identify shapes by their attributes and partition them into equal shares. We also discussed time to the nearest 5 minutes and creating a pictograph. And as always... we keep working on those math facts:)

Happy 2017!
