Congratulations to all the students in room 3 for earning THE GOLDEN SPOON, not just once... but 2 weeks in a row. This means that our class has been consistently showing The HES way during our time in the cafeteria.
We have been hard at work this past week. In Math, we have been learning about different kinds of story problems such as compare, take-from, and put together. We have also been learning about different kinds of strategies we can use to solve addition and subtraction math facts. In Reading we have been working on the second part of our first unit which teaches readers to roll up their sleeves and keep trying when things get tough. We have talked about strategies for word solving and for confusing parts. In writing we continue to work on our small moment stories. We have been crafting powerful endings to our stories and rereading to make sure our writing says what we want it to say and makes sense. In Social Studies, we have been learning about communities and community workers. Feel free to let us know if you have any questions!
This week has been busy! In reading workshop we talked about how readers set goals, how they scoop words together to build fluency and how they stop, think, and retell to keep tabs on their comprehension. In writing we have been working on our small moment stories. The students have learned how to plan their small moments, grow their stories across pages, and zoom in to add detail. In Math, we have been working on solving story problems and solving math equations using efficient strategies. We have also started our math workshop where students get to play games, use the computers and work with Mrs. Drejer. The class enjoyed sharing their all about me posters and we certainly learned a lot about our friends. We are looking forward to another great week!
The students in room 3 are off to a great start! We have been learning all about our classroom routines and procedures. We have been getting to work on our reading, writing, and math. In reading, we have talked about our second grade growth spurt! We've talked about how readers can choose books that make them feel special and can then decide how those books should be read. In writing, we have shared our hopes and dreams for second grade, as well as out best and worst parts of summer. We are excited to launch our first unit on narrative writing and small moments. In math, we have been learning about our math workshop. We have also taken our pre-assessments for our upcoming units on addition/subtraction to 20 and place value. We had a chance to get to use some of the math manipulatives and have been working with the hundreds chart. Please check back often to find out some of the other great things were working on!
