We continue to work with Mrs. Johnson to learn about the different forces of erosion and how they change the earth's surface. Here are some pictures testing out the effects of wind, water, ice, and an earthquake on our sand samples.

Here are a few pictures from last Friday. Thank you to all the families that donated treats to our party.
We had another great week in Room 5.
Our read aloud is about hamster named Humphrey, who is a classroom pet. He goes on adventures each weekend when he goes home with different classmates. Our class has enjoyed reading about the adventures and predicting what we think Humphrey will do next. In math we continue to work on place value and learned about standard form (325), expanded form (300+20+5), and word form (three hundred twenty-five). In reading we are enjoying nonfiction books and learning how to use text features to learn the most we can from the text. We are taking the time to notice when we find interesting facts and jot them down to share with or partners. We are still publishing our narrative writing and will begin writing Creative Creature writing. The class made pictures with Mr. Granucci in art for inspiration and we will write about them next week. Here is an example of one of our Math Monsters that shows the different forms we have been working on. We had fun today using the iPads to practice mapping skills. The class used Nearpod to learn about map title, key, scale, and compass rose. This app uses interactive lessons in which the students type or draw their answers. I get to see the answers from each student as they are working. They also get a report at the end showing how each of them did.
Our nonfiction reading unit is off to a great start. It is wonderful to hear the buzz during Reading Workshop - they are so excited about the new facts that they are discovering! This week we worked on noticing the details in nonfiction text and how to put them all together. While reading we looked for places that we had questions about and marked them with Post It notes so that we could share with reading partners.
We continue to publish our narrative stories. The class is learning quickly how to access their Google account and type their stories in their Google Drive. We continued to work on place value in math. We did a lot of hands on work with base ten blacks to show two- and three-digit numbers. We played different games to practice trading 10 ones for 1 ten and 10 tens for 1 hundred. We also continue to work on our fact fluency. Please keep practicing at home if possible. We enjoyed being the "big buddies" to our Kindergarten friends on Thursday. We enjoyed watching their Favorite Character Parade and then joined them in their rooms to listen to them read their favorite books. Our classmates were encouraging and supported the Kindergarten friends as they begin to read. The class made pictures for the people affected by the hurricane in Puerto Rico. The pictures were included in comfort bags with the hopes to cheer up the recipients while they recover from this tragedy. Here are some pictures of partners working together to get their stories ready to publish. Thank you to the Haddam Volunteer Fire Department for visiting HES on Thursday. We learned from Firefighter Frank, our own Cooper's dad, how to be safe during a fire. The highlight of the visit was getting to talk with the firefighters and get a closeup look of the truck.
As we start our second unit on place value, we explored ways to count items by first making them into groups of ten with left over ones. Students had hands on experience counting larger numbers of items and recording them as tens and ones.
Today was a busy day finishing our reading and math units.
In reading we got ready for our new unit, which will start on Tuesday. This next unit is all about nonfiction text - always a favorite with the students. They spent time today looking for nonfiction books for their book boxes so that we can start the unit off strong on Tuesday. In writing we did our first narrative writing prompt. The students wrote their best small moment personal narrative story in one (some two) sittings. Next week we will pick a piece to publish, which will be done on the Google drive and then printed for illustrating. I will have these stories to share with you at conference time. We took our Unit 1 post test in math this morning. Be on the lookout for the scores to come home the beginning of next week. On Tuesday we will start Unit 2 which is place value up to 1000. We will focus on standard, word, and expanded form and the importance of the place of each digit in a number (ones, tens, or hundreds place). I have seen some movement in subtraction fact fluency for the students who are putting in the practice time - keep up the great work! Click here for a fun math website that has games that work on foundation skills, but can still be challenging. The first homework sheet is due back on Tuesday. A new sheet will be sent home. I hope you have a great long weekend - enjoy the time together! Another busy week has flown by. We attended this month's Town Meeting at the end of the day today. Our class earned our goal of showing respect for the month of September. October's school-wide focus is responsibility We will discuss and be on the lookout for ways to be responsible.
In both reading and writing this week we focused on mentor texts and author's craft. While reading we stopped to mark powerful parts of the story and how the author got his/her message across. We took ideas from reading and tried out some of the author's craft in our own writing. This week's math focus was on bar graphs and pictographs. We learned the characteristics of each and how to gather information from both types. Students were given subtraction flashcards to work on at school, and will be given a set for home to use for homework which will start next week. Here is an example of our class reading chart. We put our post it notes up after discussing the reading with reading partners. |
